How to use the VAT calculator
- Enter the amount: the net amount if you're adding VAT, or the final price if you're removing it.
- Choose one of Spain's VAT rates or select “Other rate” and enter the percentage.
- Choose the operation —add or remove VAT— and review the net amount, VAT and total.
VAT formula
Add: VAT = B × t; Total = B + VAT · Remove: B = Total / (1 + t)
What each variable means
- B
- net amount
- t
- VAT rate as a decimal (21% = 0.21)
To remove VAT you don't subtract the percentage from the total: divide the total by (1 + rate), because VAT was calculated on the net amount, not the total.
VAT calculation example
A €100 net amount at 21% produces €21 VAT: €121 total. Conversely, a €121 VAT-inclusive price has a net amount of 121 / 1.21 = €100.

Assumptions and limitations
- Preset rates apply to mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands; the Canary Islands (IGIC), Ceuta and Melilla (IPSI) use different taxes.
- Which rate applies to each product or service depends on the law; check the official source.
- Amounts are rounded to the cent.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I subtract 21% from the final price?
Because 21% applies to the net amount, not the total. Subtracting 21% from €121 gives €95.59, not €100.
Does it work for Mexico, Peru or other countries?
Yes, choose “Other rate” and enter the applicable rate. Country-specific rules will be added once verified.
