Loan payment formula

Payment = C × i / (1 − (1 + i)^−n)

What each variable means

C
amount borrowed
i
monthly rate = annual rate / 12
n
number of monthly payments

Each payment first covers the month's interest on the outstanding balance; the rest repays principal. That's why early payments are mostly interest.

Personal loan example

A €10,000 loan at 7% over 60 months has a €198.01 monthly payment. You'll repay about €11,881 in total, of which about €1,881 is interest.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Standard amortizing loan: constant monthly payment at a fixed rate.
  • The payment is rounded to the cent; the final payment absorbs the difference.
  • Opening fees, linked insurance and other costs are not included.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the nominal rate and the APR?

The nominal rate is the pure interest rate. The APR also includes fees and payment frequency, so it's better for comparing offers.

Is a longer term better?

The payment is lower, but you pay more interest overall. Compare both figures before deciding.
